Chelsea have romped to a convincing five-goal drubbing away at Southampton. Make sure you join us again on Tribe for more Premier League action tomorrow. It's been a pleasure bringing you this one from St Mary's on the south coast. For now, Harrison Ryburn signing out.
It doesn't get any easier for Southampton, with a trip to Aston Villa on the weekend. Meanwhile Chelsea are back in action with a London derby against Spurs away from home on Sunday. That contest promises fireworks, and will be a good litmus test for the Blues as they attempt to continue their unbeaten streak heading into the festive period.
With performances like that it's hard to see how Southampton are going to stay in the Premier League for next season. They made a really encouraging start, getting on the front foot, and pressing energetically and aggressively. Russell Martin's side crumbled defensively though, and shot themselves in the foot by conceding two goals inside the first 17 minutes. That was compounded when captain Jack Stepehens was sent off for a tug of Cucurella's hair before the half-time break. It's that lack of discipline and focus which is costing Southampton this season, and it was on show for everyone to see tonight. The home fans let their disgust known too, and many had left before half-time. It's going to take a Christmas miracle for the Saints to turn this around.
It could've been a couple more for Chelsea on another day, striking the woodwork twice, and creating a number of other big opportunities over the course of the match, particuarly in the second half. Maresca rolled the dice with seven changes from the side that defeated Aston Villa on the weekend, and they were relatively slow through the opening 25 minutes. Mistakes from the hosts handed them a lead on the scoreboard though, and when they did click into gear, their attacking talents rolled through the Saints. Palmer, Madueke, Nkunku, and Felix were all superb, and their pace and aggression proved too much for their opponents to handle. The work of their high press also played a part in forcing mistakes out of the Southampton backline, particuarly from Lumley in goal. It's another confidence boosting result for Maresca's side, and Liverpool will start to look over their shoulders the longer Chelsea keep this unbeaten streak going.
Fulltime at St Mary's and Chelsea solidify second spot on the Premier League ladder with a five-goal drubbing of Southampton. Axel Disasi gave them the lead inside the first seven minutes, only to be momentarily pulled back by an equailser from Joe Aribo. That was as good as it got for the Saints though, and they scored two more before half-time with Christopher Nkunu and Nodi Madueke, before finishing the job with strikes from Cole Palmer and Jaden Sancho in the second half. That makes it six Premier League games unbeaten for Chelsea, whilst Southampton continue to slip further behind at the foot of the table.
90+5'
Maresca's name continues to be chanted by the travelling fans as the clock winds down. Aribo and Sulemana keep some possession here for Southampton, and Chelsea press, but not with the same intensity.
90+4'
Sancho goes in search of a long ball over the top, and keeps it in play down the right flank. He fails to get a delivery away though, and the Saints intercept and clear through Wood at the near post.
90+2'
Into six minutes of injury-time we go at the end of this one. Southampton manage to get the ball out of their own half and win a throw down the right flank. It comes back for Walker-Peters to control, but he comes under pressure from Dewbsury-Hall and gives the ball away.
