That wraps things up here on Tribe, and what a start to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup! Newcastle have come away with a two-goal lead leaving Arsenal with it all to do in the North-East in the second leg. Spurs host Liverpool tomorrow in the other semi-final first leg. See you then!
It's almost a month before the second leg on Wednesday 5th February at St. James' Park. Newcastle host Bromley on Sunday in the FA Cup Third Round, before welcoming Bournemouth in the Premier League next Wednesday as they aim to add to their seven consecutive wins. Arsenal have a tougher FA Cup assignment at home to Manchester United also on Sunday, before hosting Spurs in the North London Derby in their next league game a week tomorrow.
This was a truly memorable night for Newcastle United. A stunning away performance, they were clinical when chances presented themselves then defended resiliently to hold onto their two-goal lead. Alexander Isak was instrumental in both goals, and how Arsenal could have done with a striker like him here. When he was brought off in the final quarter you worried how Newcastle might hold on without a striker to hold the ball up. In the end though Eddie Howe's decisions were vindicated by a fantastic defensive performance. Dan Burn in particular was immense, heading and blocking everything that came his way, while Joelinton relieved the pressure on more than one occasion by drawing fouls and getting on the end of second balls.
This was not Arsenal's night. They dominated possession and chances created in the first half, but went behind against the run of play to trail at the break. The real sucker punch though was the second goal early in the second half. That gave Newcastle the impetus to bring on an extra defender and simply challenge Mikel Arteta's side to find a way through. Despite their best efforts they couldn't force a way back in and now have it all to do in the second leg away from home. Corners have been so effective for Arsenal in recent times, but tonight they couldn't make any one of a dozen or so deliveries count. Up against two blocks of five in the final stages, it was very difficult to pick holes or find a way through. Many shots were blocked and crosses headed clear.
NEWCASTLE TAKE A HUGE ADVANTAGE! There's no massive celebrations as the job is only half-done. Newcastle have come to the Emirates and won by two goals in this first leg though. It's a huge result and one the 7,000 travelling fans can barely contain their joy over. Anthony Gordon's follow-up early in the second half added to Alexander Isak's first-half strike, and from there the visitors shut up shop and defended superbly to keep Arsenal out.
