That wraps things up here on Tribe, thanks for joining us. We've got plenty more Champions League coverage kicking off now, so go and check out all the action. See you next time.
With this being an early game at the start of Matchday 7, the implications of this result won't be fully clear until later tomorrow. It's likely Aston Villa may drop out of the top eight after this defeat though, as they remain on 13 points. 11 teams are three points or fewer behind them with their games still to play. A win against Celtic at home next Wednesday will be required to give them a chance of direct progression to the last 16. Monaco move up to 9th on 13 points. They are a long shot to make the top eight, as anything less than a win away to Inter Milan is likely to leave them in the play-offs as one of the sides finishing between 9th and 24th. This win does mean they look likely to have home advantage in the second leg of that play-off round though. Monaco host Rennes on Saturday before then, while Aston Villa welcome West Ham to Villa Park on Sunday in the Premier League.
Aston Villa have enjoyed some memorable nights on their return to the UEFA Champions League, but this wasn't one to add to that collection. After falling behind they created plenty of chances in the first half, but after the break they really struggled to break down a resilient Monaco defence. Even pairing Ollie Watkins up top with Jhon Duran failed to have a real impact, with neither attacker having many clear chances in a frustrating second half. Youri Tielemans wasted a couple of corners late on and Ian Maatsen couldn't get many crosses in off the left after replacing Lucas Digne. Villa probably did deserve to come away with a result here, but instead they must brush themselves down and prepare for a big final game at home to Celtic.
After a disappointing run of results, this was a huge win for Monaco tonight. It guarantees their progression in the Champions League, and even leaves an outside chance of a top-eight finish if they can upset Inter Milan away next Wednesday. It was a superb team performance with particularly impressive displays from centre backs Wilfried Singo and Thilo Kehrer. Singo in particular was dominant defensively and a real threat in the other penalty area from set pieces. Takumi Minamino ran his socks off to try and bring Monaco forward in the second half, while Aleksandr Golovin was particularly lively after coming off the bench. Breel Embolo led the line well and had good support off both flanks from Maghnes Akliouche and Eliesse Ben Seghir. They will be a difficult team to beat in the knock-out stages based on this evidence.
Monaco come out on top in a hard-fought battle. Both sides had opportunities but neither could add to Wilfried Singo's first-half header. That proved decisive as Monaco earn a fourth win from seven to move level on 13 points with Aston Villa. The visitors crash to just a second defeat that could put their top eight chances at risk. In truth they didn't create enough here and struggled to put pressure on in the final quarter as they chased an equaliser.

Villa can't get any attacking momentum going in these final moments. Boubacar Kamara catches Maghnes Akliouche late in the Monaco half. The hosts push everyone forward as Radoslaw Majecki prepares to launch the ball upfield.

Jhon Duran has his back to goal as the ball bounces towards him on the edge of the Monaco penalty area. He gives his marker a push before attempting an acrobatic overhead kick. The effort is straight at Radoslaw Majecki and Duran is penalised for a foul so it wouldn't have counted anyway.

Now there's a yellow card for Monaco. Aleksandr Golovin drifts offside but opts to kick the ball away to try and waste a few extra seconds. He goes in the book.
