Southampton will be annoyed that they haven't got even a point out of that 90 minutes as they were more than in it. They had some half chances in the first half, but one big one fell to Manning on the left side of the box. He dragged it wide, but the attacking intent was there. The Villa goal was Southampton's own making as they brought the pressure on themselves with a short goal-kick just a minute before. That led to a big chance for Duran, which Lumley saved. The crowd were up for it, though, after that, and just a minute later, Duran caught Harwood-Bellis hesitating on the ball. In the second half, they did struggle to threaten Villa's goal, with Martinez not having a save to make. That is the story of Southampton's season so far. They remain bottom of the table on five points, now eight points off safety due to Crystal Palace picking up a point.

Watkins had about four chances to get his name on the scoresheet and confirm the win but failed to take them. However, it didn't matter in the end, as Villa held on to move up to fifth place on 25 points. They are three points off second.
