Brazil have made a slow start to their Copa America campaign with a goalless draw against a steely Costa Rican side. Make sure you join me again on Tribe tomorrow as Argentina face Chile in a blockbuster clash from New Jersey. It's been a pleasure bringing you all the action from Los Angeles tonight. For now, Harrison Ryburn signing out.
Next up for Brazil is a clash with Paraguay in Las Vegas on Friday, who like Los Ticos, should also provide a steely and gritty defensive backline. With just the sole point tonight, the pressure will come on as they attempt to register their first win ahead of a final group match against Colombia. Meanwhile Costa Rica face Los Cafateros on the same day, bouyed by this miraculous effort. Once again they'll go in as firm underdogs, but can't be discounted after the brilliant defensive performance here.
A brilliant result for Costa Rica and one that they will savour for some time to come. They are a nation that has continually suprised at major tournaments, particuarly thinking back to their quarter-final run at the 2014 World Cup, and this was a result to go alongside those memorable performances. Gustavo Alfaro's men were incredibly disciplined in defence, and their low block made life very difficult for the Brazillian frontline. Mitchell and Calvo were particuarly outstanding in marshaling the backline, whilst Sequiera also saved the day with a number of big saves. They struggled to get much going down the other end, lacking an attacking outlet who could effectlively hold up play, but won't be too worried given the quality of their opposition. Los Ticos rode their luck as well today, and were given a reprieve when Marquinhos had his first half goal ruled out for offside, whilst also relying on some wasteful Brazilian finishing. This was a brilliant fighting performance though, and one that will give them real confidence as they continue on with their campaign in Group D.
This was supposed to be a walk in the park for Brazil tonight, and it certainly looked as if it was going to be that way after completelty dominating the early play. The longer they were kept out by the Costa Rican defence, the more the pressure built though, and the Selecao were left continually frustrated as they failed to find a way to the back of the net. Dorival Junior's side dominated 74% of the possession and kept their opponents pegged back inside their own half for almost the entirety, but couldn't come up with a moment of decisive accuracy in the final third. Paqueta and Guimaraes created chances for their front men in the playmaking role, but none of Rodrygo, Vinicius Junior, or Raphinha could quite find the back of the net. Highly-touted 17-year old Endrick failed to make an impact off the bench when required late on either, and ultimately Brazil were lacking in attacking quality. On another day they would have had three or four for all their dominance of the contest, but they've been made to settle for a solitary point, and the pressure will come on as they move onto play Paraguay and Colombia in their remaining group fixtures.
Fulltime in Los Angeles and Costa Rica have pulled off one of their greatest results to hold Brazil to a goalless draw in their Copa America opener. The Selecao dominated from start to finish, but were continually denied by a couple of brilliant saves from Patrick Sequeira in goal, and the compactness and discipline of this Costa Rican defence. It's not a result many would have expected, and the pressure will now come on Dorival Junior and his side, who have made a stuttering start to their Copa America campaign.
90+5'
One final minute for Los Ticos to see out, and Sequeira sends the goal kick long over halfway. Brazil take it down and send it long for Savio down the right, but the substitiute clatters into a defender and Costa Rica get a free kick. That might be that for the Selecao.
90+4'
CHANCE! Militao looks up and lifts a hopeful delivery into box, falling for Paqueta near the penalty spot. He hits it on the half-volley, but he can't control his effort and it bounces narrowly past Rodrygo and wide of the left post. It's the Costa Rican fans making all the noise in Los Angeles now.
90+3'
The ball comes all the way back for Alisson, who is quick to feed it forward for Marquinhos. Costa Rica sit back waiting for another wave of Brazilian attack. Savio picks up another touch down the right, but he can't get a cross away and lays it off for Danilo in support.
90+2'
Costa Rica look to suffocate a couple more moments off the clock as Joseph Mora and Gerald Taylor enter the action late on.
