Arsenal have progressed through to the quarer-finals of the Carabao Cup with a routine win over Preston North End. Make sure you switch over to catch the end of the only remaining fourth round tie between Spurs and Manchester City. It's been a pleasure bringing you all the action from Deepdale. For now, Harrison Ryburn signing out.
After dropping points in each of their last two Premier League matches, Arsenal face an important clash with Newcastle away at St James Park on Saturday. Meanwhile, Preston will hope to maintain their unbeaten run in the Championship when they host Bristol City.
A tough one for Preston North End in contrast, who were simply never able to get themselves into the contest. They did well to hold out for Arsenal for twenty minutes, but after falling behind, never looked like threatening a comeback. Paul Heckingbottom's side just couldn't gain a grip on the possession stats, and struggled to build passes with ball at feet. They lacked an attacking outlet for much of the opening hour too, until Jakobsen and Frokjaer-Jensen entered the contest in the hope of grabbing a consolation late on. The Lilywhites finished brightly as a result, but the contest was well over by that point, and they struggled to give the home fans anything to cheer about. It's a result that brings to an end their Carabao Cup run, again failing to break their quarter-final hoodoo, and falling at the round of sixteen stage.
No problems for Arsenal tonight, and they hardly had to get out of second gear in dispatching of their Championship opponents. Arteta's side dictated 75% of the possession and suffocated Preston with the way they were able to control the tempo, showing patience in their build-up play and taking advantage with a some fine finishing in the final third. Ethan Nwaneri was the big positive to come out of this one, backing up his two-goal showing against Bolton in the last round, with another strong performance in the middle of the park, and a stunning goal to go alongside it. Saliba also looked strong upon his return from suspension at the back, whilst Kiwior bagged two assists, and Jesus scored his first goal since January with a first-time finish to open the scoring. A routine evening in the end for Arsenal as such, and they'll have their name in the quarter-final draw later tonight.
Fulltime at Deepdale and Arsenal have booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup with a comfortable three-goal victory over Preston North End. It was a walk in the park at times for the Gunners, opening the scoring through Gabriel Jesus halfway through the opening stanza, before doubling their lead with a stunning long-range effort from 17-year old Ethan Nwaneri ten minutes before the break. Kai Havertz added the icing on the cake off the bench, scoring a third close to the hour mark, and Arteta's men cruised home from there, despite missing a couple of chances to add to their advantage. Preston lose their ninth consecutive fourth round League Cup clash, whilst the Gunners are into the quarter-finals for the first time in three seasons.
90+3'
BIG CHANCE! Havertz takes off through the middle of the pitch, and splits the Preston defence with a run into the box. He rounds Woodman and lays it off for Sterling to tap into the back of the net from close range, but Potts does brilliantly to rush back and clear away off the line. Sterling is denied his goal late in injury-time!
90+2'
The corner off the left is whipped into the middle, where Thordarson gets up to head clear. It comes back out for Partey and Arsenal reset. The right-back plays a direct pass through the middle towards the box, but Jakobsen is back to get in the way and intercept.
90+1'
Three minutes to play at the end of this one, and Sterling takes the ball down on the left wing, before advancing towards the byline. He cuts inside into the box, before opening up for a shot on his right foot. It's blocked by Potts though, and Arsenal settle for a corner.
