That wraps things up here on Tribe, thanks for joining us. We'll have all the action from the Premier League coming your way this weekend, starting with Arsenal v Brighton on Saturday lunchtime. See you then.
So Newcastle United await the outcome of the draw for the Third Round coming up shortly. All the sides in European competitions enter at this next stage, so the Magpies will hope to avoid any of them. They are back at home on Sunday when Spurs travel to St. James' Park. Nottingham Forest will also be back at home on Saturday when Wolves make the short trip up to the East Midlands. That will be a big occasion for Nuno Espirito Santo against his former club. After that both sides head into the first international break of the new season. There's also only three days left to make any final transfers before the window slams shut until January.
Newcastle United and their long-suffering fans crave a trophy. Progression tonight means they remain in the cup which Eddie Howe has come closest to winning since taking over. It wasn't a stellar performance, but they were the side who started and finished the game stronger. Carlos Miguel certainly had more to do in the Forest goal than Nick Pope at the other end. Sandro Tonali got some much-needed minutes in on his return from a long ban, while Lewis Hall and Harvey Barnes both impressed down the left flank.
Nottingham Forest will be disappointed to exit the cup after a spirited performance tonight. They fought back well after falling behind so early and more than played their part in a really entertaining cup tie. Taiwo Awoniyi was always a threat in attack but will be kicking himself over his horrendous penalty in the shoot-out.
When Joelinton's spot kick was saved by Carlos Miguel it looked like it would be Nottingham Forest's night. However, two consecutive misses from Ibrahim Sangare and Taiwo Awoniyi proved costly for the hosts and switched the momentum back to Newcastle. Sean Longstaff made no mistake with their fifth and final penalty to send the Magpies into the Third Round.
NEWCASTLE WIN THE PENALTY SHOOT-OUT! Sean Longstaff makes no mistake with the crucial 5th penalty. He slides it low into the bottom right corner. Carlos Miguel goes the wrong way.
