CHANCE! Should do better! Another free-kick, this time in a more central area inside the Liverpool half, and again the left boot of Cresswell delivers a peach of a cross. It finds the head of Todibo, who shows his upper body strength to hold off the attention Tsimikas but guides his header wide of the left-hand post from 10 yards out. 

GOOD CHANCE! Almost an immediate impact from Mac Allister, who spots the forward run of Jones and slides a lovely pass between two of the West Ham backline to find him. Jones is pulled back momentarily by Kilman - who is wise to let go of the Liverpool man quickly - and the eventual, poked effort goalwards is stopped by the onrushing Fabianski. 

Liverpool have been far the better team since finding that equalising goal, but it's all a little disjointed heading into the final third. More quick passing almost leads to Jota driving into a pocket of space, but he's caught in possession by a good West Ham challenge. 

TWO FOR LIVERPOOL! TWO FOR DIOGO JOTA! The Reds move through the thirds at pace, the ball finding the feet of Jones who slides a lovely pass between a couple of defenders and in-behind for Jota to latch onto. The Portuguese forward's finish - a first-time, cushioned effort towards the bottom right corner - is just out of Fabianski's reach and nestles in the back of the net.

CLOSE! Nearly a second for Liverpool! Bradley's dangerous cross in from the right isn't dealt with at all well by the visitors, running right the way through for Gakpo. He brings the ball down and takes a moment to compose himself before taking aim, and his low shot across the face of goal takes a big deflection and bounces just beyond the far post.

OFF THE POST! That would've sealed the win! Mac Allister has come close already, and again the Argentine is thwarted by Fabianski. Taking aim from outside the penalty area, his fierce right-footed drive is pushed onto the post by the West Ham goalkeeper, who is alert to the follow-up and hangs onto the second shot. 

Two more changes for Liverpool as we move into the final 10 minutes. local lad Tyler Morton and left-back Andy Robertson enter the fray, in place of Wataru Endo and Kostas Tsimikas.

CHANCE! Liverpool look in the mood now! Tsimikas is released down the left-hand side of the box, and he tries to stand a cross up for a team-mate. It sails just beyond the leaping Nunez and is a little too far away for Jota, who tries to bring the ball in but ends up booting Todibo inadvertently and conceding the free-kick.

PENALTY APPEAL! Huge shouts for handball by the Hammers, but the referee says no! It comes after an attempted give-and-go between Summerville and Soler near the edge of the box. The return pass strikes Gomez, who did appear to have his arm by his side, and the referee emphatically waves the penalty appeals away. Remember - there's no VAR in operation tonight...

KICK-OFF! Off we go again! Liverpool get things underway, with no changes to report at the break. 

The teams are on their way out at Anfield, and kick-off is next! Don't go anywhere...

Soler makes a nuisance of himself inside the Liverpool half and does well to earn his side a free-kick in a dangerous crossing position. Cresswell's ensuing delivery is a good one, but it's a touch too short for Bowen to attack and Liverpool do enough to repel the threat.

PENALTY APPEAL! Shouts for a spot-kick as Gakpo tries to drive between Coufal and Bowen and ends up being the meat in a West Ham sandwich, right on the edge of the box. The challenge came just outside the penalty area in the eyes of the referee, and he allows play to continue in any case. 

The remonstrations from West Ham were a little overzealous after that no handball call, and the yellow cards are out in quick succession. Manager Julen Lopetegui is first to be shown a card, and Paqueta isn't far behind. 

CHANCE! West Ham have been a real threat from set-pieces all night, and again they come close! This time, an inswinging Cresswell free-kick from the right strikes the shoulder of Soucek and loops towards the far post. It takes a crucial intervention from Bradley to divert the ball out of harm's way, with Bowen waiting to let fly just beyond the Northern Irishman. 

WEST HAM ARE DOWN TO 10! A really unnecessary challenge from a West Ham perspective, and Edson Alvarez is shown his marching orders! In his attempts to stop Salah from breaking forward down the Liverpool right, Alvarez lunges in with a mistimed challenge which catches the Egyptian on the top of the foot. The referee gives the foul, exchanges a few words with his linesman then shows the second yellow card. A real uphill task for the Hammers from here.

Tonight, Liverpool get their Carabao Cup defence underway, against a side who have flattered to deceive in the early weeks of the season. While Arne Slot's Reds have hit the ground running on all fronts - aside from what can surely only be described as a blip at home to Nottingham Forest earlier this month, based on recent showings - West Ham have only tasted victory twice since the season began - one of those wins coming in the last round of this competition against Bournemouth. Hammers fans can perhaps be forgiven for heading to Merseyside more in hope than expectation. Their start to the season has been slow, and a trip to one of this season's title contenders means it likely won't get any easier. Liverpool are the masters of this competition, winning it twice in the last three seasons and a record 10 times overall. Can they add another Carabao Cup to their collection, and bring silverware the way of their new boss during his first season at the helm, you wonder?

Two changes for the visitors as Andy Irving and Mohammed Kudus replace Carlos Soler and Jarrod Bowen. 

The defending Carabao Cup champions are up and running, having come from behind to sweep aside West Ham United in some style! Level at half-time, it took just four minutes of the second half for Diogo Jota to confidently double his and Liverpool's tally for the night. West Ham still looked a threat, but Mo Salah marked his cameo from the bench with a goal which killed off the Hammers, and a second yellow card for Edson Alvarez a few minutes later made their task immeasurably harder. The floodgates opened at the end, with two goals for Cody Gakpo ensuring the scoreline looked a little more emphatic from a Liverpool perspective. Still, the Reds fully deserved to book their place in Round 4, and they will learn their opponents for the next round when the draw is made, just a few minutes from now. 

A typically no-nonsense sliding challenge from Alvarez inside the Liverpool half is a little late, and it's enough to draw the second yellow card of the night. 

The fourth official signals five added minutes...

A double change apiece as we reach the hour mark. For Liverpool, Mo Salah and Alexis Mac Allister are on to replace Federico Chiesa and Diogo Jota, scorer of both their goals tonight. West Ham respond by sending on Lucas Paqueta and Michail Antonio. Tomas Soucek and Danny Ings are the players withdrawn. 

Chiesa fancies his luck with a free-kick from 25 yards out, but Tsimikas overrules him and looks to cross for a team-mate instead. The ball brushes a head on its way behind, and although three Liverpool defenders appeal for the corner, a goal-kick is given. 

THREE FOR LIVERPOOL! That should settle things! The Reds move one step closer to a place in Round 4, and it's a familiar source of goals which comes up trumps. Mo Salah angles a ball in-behind for Bradley, whose cross from the byline is turned goalwards by Mac Allister. Fabianski does well to make the initial save at point-blank range, but there's nothing he can do to stop Salah from lashing the ball into the roof of the net on the follow-up. 

Quite what Tsimikas is thinking from the corner is anyone's guess! His floated set-piece delivery is far too deep, and it only succeeds in finding a West Ham player to clear.

PENALTY APPEAL! The biggest shout of the night, but again West Ham's appeals for handball fall on deaf ears! Coufal digs out a cross from the right side of the box and it hits Tsimikas at point-blank range. The Hammers are convinced that the ball struck an arm, but the Greek defender says it hit his chest and the referee agrees.

Gakpo loses possession cheaply inside the attacking half and West Ham look to counter quickly, but the pass forward for Ings is very wayward and the Hammers soon cough up the ball again. Very sloppy from the Hammers.

CHANCE! This one more of a snapshot, but still a sighter for West Ham! Bowen does well to drive inside from the right and take aim from near the corner of the box. In the end it's a routine save at the near post for Kelleher, who positioned himself really well to cover his angles.

GOOD CHANCE! Big opportunity spurned! Summerville does well to dispossess Bradley inside his own half, then exchanges passes with Antonio as he bursts forward into the final third. The former Leeds United man tries to fire across the face of Kelleher but drags his effort just beyond the far post. A goal there would've made things really interesting!

CHANCE! A bright early start for Liverpool as Bradley bursts forward down the right and wins a corner near the byline. Tsimikas' inswinging set-piecedelivery brushes off the head of Cresswell at the near post and strikes two more of his team-mates, but thankfully the final touch takes sends the ball looping well wide of goal.

GOALLLLL... NO! The offside flag thwarts Ings, who is denied a dream moment on his return to Anfield! The West Ham move starts after excellent work from Bowen to ride a couple of challenges, drive further into the Liverpool half then spread the play left to find Summerville in acres of space. He gets his feet in a tangle as he enters the box but the ball still finds a way through to Ings, whose low finish goes past Kelleher but won't count! As you were.

Gakpo tries to use the overlapping run of a team-mate to his advantage and cut inside from the Liverpool left. On this occasion, the Dutchman is marshalled well by Bowen and the West Ham captain sticks a leg in to regain possession.

WEST HAM TEAM NEWS: There are also plenty of changes for the visitors - seven in total. Jarrod Bowen captains the side, with defender Max Kilman, midfielder Edson Alvarez and winger Crysencio Summerville the three other players who remain in Julen Lopetegui's starting XI following the Hammers' 3-0 defeat at home to Chelsea last time out. It looks like the focal point of their attack will be Danny Ings, who spent three injury-disrupted years at Liverpool and made a total of 25 appearances.

CHANCE! The final whistle can't come soon enough for West Ham, who are chasing shadows now. 

CHANCE! Tsimikas is caught out positionally for the first time tonight as a searching low ball down the right channel gives Bowen something to latch onto in-behind. He does well to hold off the advances of Gomez then deliver a meaningful cross from near the byline. There are two up in support for the Hammers, but the delivery evades both of them and Liverpool get it away. 

Gomez tries to make an impact from the back, sending one long for Chiesa to latch onto. The idea is good, but West Ham are alert to the danger and manage to repel the threat of the Italian in-behind. 

CHANCE! Quansah tries to make immediate amends at the other end, getting his head to an inviting free-kick from the right but guiding his effort well over the bar.

Good work again down the Liverpool left. The beneficiary of a fortunate ricochet, Tsimikas moves the ball further wide for Gakpo, whose searching cross is volleyed behind for a corner by Todibo.

CLOSE! How has that not gone in?! Try as they might, West Ham just cannot find a way through! A short corner almost pays dividends for the Hammers as Antonio plays in Summerville. He's thwarted near the byline and the ball breaks for Antonio again. His first-time drive is blocked inside the six-yard box, it breaks for Kilman, but he can't sort his feet out and a combination of Kelleher and Tsimikas do just enough to run him out of room near the far post.

DEADLOCK BROKEN AT ANFIELD! It's the scruffiest of goals, but West Ham won't care one bit! Cresswell's inswinging corner from the left is nodded down well by Kilman to find Alvarez. He tries to sort his feet out in front of goal but can't quite manage to do so. It matters little, however, as in his haste to clear, Endo fires the ball against the leg of Jarrell Quansah and beyond the helpless Kelleher. 

LIVERPOOL ARE LEVEL! That didn't take long! Superb football from the Reds as some quick interplay culminates in Gakpo being released down the left channel. He waits for support to arrive, level with the penalty area, then stands a cross up for Chiesa. A touch behind the Italian, his volleyed effort bounces off the turf and towards the far post, where Diogo Jota rises highest between goalkeeper and defender to nod home from close range. 

GOOD CHANCE! Now it's Liverpool who are left frustrated! A ball down the left-hand side of the penalty area finds Nunez, who keeps the ball in play near the byline under pressure. Fabianski does enough to knock him off his stride but the ball still breaks the way of Salah. His attempted shot is wayward but drops at the back post for Jones, who tries to turn the ball home and finds a West Ham defender blocking his route to goal. 

It looks like changes might be afoot, with movement on both benches. In the meantime, play continues as Gakpo tries to latch onto a long ball forward but is flagged for offside.

GREAT SAVE! Fabianski is getting through some work now! Liverpool look hungry for more goals, and Gakpo jinks inside from the left and enters the box, searching for space to work his magic. His eventual shot on goal is a powerful one, and the West Ham goalkeeper is forced to beat the effort away. 

Honours even at Anfield as we reach the halfway stage. Liverpool have been on top for large parts, but an unfortunate own-goal for Jarrell Quansah means the two teams find themselves locked at a goal apiece. There was very little the young centre-back could do to get out of the way of Wataru Endo's attempted clearance midway through the half, the ball cannoning off him and flying beyond the helpless Caoimhin Kelleher. That goal gave West Ham the lead a little against the run of play, but Arne Slot's side were behind for a matter of minutes as Diogo Jota nodded home from Federico Chiesa's volleyed cross-shot to restore parity. The Reds have been much the better team, but chances at either end have been at a premium. Will that change after the break?

BLOCKED! A nervous hush falls over Anfield as Cresswell sends in another inviting corner from the left. Todibo rises well to meet the cross but is beaten to it in the air, but the clearing header does at least drop for a team-mate in Bowen. The Hammers captain sends a volley goalwards from just outside the box, and it strikes a Liverpool defender before looping to safety. 

GOAL NUMBER FIVE! Cody Gakpo has another! Collecting the ball near the left corner of the penalty area, he holds off the challenge of Kudus, skips onto his right foot near the edge of the box then fires towards goal. His shot takes a crucial deflection off the helpless Todibo, taking it out of Fabianski's reach and into the bottom right corner. A perfect night's work for the defending champions!

Everyone back for West Ham inside their own half as we edge closer to half-time. They've been asked to do a lot of defending in these opening 45 minutes, and you wonder whether that might take its toll later in the game. For now, they're standing up well to the threat posed by their hosts. 

It's been a long wait, but we do finally have our first card of the night. Quansah is beaten for strength by Antonio down the West Ham right so resorts to bringing down the West Ham substitute from behind. 

LIVERPOOL TEAM NEWS: Goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher and striker Darwin Nunez are the only survivors from Saturday's 3-0 victory at home to Bournemouth, with Arne Slot making a total of nine changes. One of the players who is given a chance tonight is summer signing Federico Chiesa, who makes his first start for the club. Also featuring for Liverpool at the back is Joe Gomez, who has yet to play a minute in the Premier League this season. 

LIVERPOOL HAVE FOUR! Cody Gakpo has been a threat all night, and now he has a goal to show for it! Cutting inside from the left, the Dutchman plays a quick one-two with Nunez as he enters the box, works space for a shot and drills the ball low and hard beyond Fabianski to find the bottom left corner. Liverpool are heading into Round 4!

CHANCE! Nearly the ideal start to the second half for Liverpool! A near-post corner from the right is cleared as far as Jones, who has time and space to decide what to do on the edge of the box. In the end, he shifts a little tentatively onto his left foot before lashing his shot high over the bar. 

West Ham are really being starved of the ball in these early exchanges. Arne Slot will be delighted by the start his side have made, with Liverpool pressing well and showing their superiority, without testing Fabianski as of yet.
