Thanks for joining me here on Tribe as Southampton reached the Carabao Cup’s fourth round in a dramatic penalty shootout to add to Everton’s early-season woes. I hope you’ve enjoyed our coverage; I’ve been Rory Morrow and I look forward to seeing you again soon for another live text commentary!
Up Next - Both sides have potentially crucial league matches on Saturday afternoon against Southampton’s fellow two promoted sides. Everton are on the road to face Leicester City whilst, at St Mary’s Stadium, The Saints host Ipswich Town.
After a winless, pointless start to the season, this will be a huge uplift for Southampton. They monopolised possession here and probably shaded the second-half chances. Harwood-Bellis really impressed at centre-back, scoring and leading the way with a cool, calm performance all over the pitch. Dibling looks like some prospect as he followed up his excellent match against Manchester United with a dazzling cameo off the bench. Aribo, and the second half introduction of Fernandes, helped them compete in midfield and they now have a fourth round tie to look forward to!
Another crushing result for Everton after two defeats from two-goal winning positions in the Premier League. On the plus side, having the combative Doucoure back in midfield certainly strengthened their spine. Youngsters, Dixon and Armstrong both did well on their starts, Dixon, especially, catching the eye with his positive forward runs down the right wing. Ultimately, though, Everton need to start converting these positive performances into some tangible results.
SOUTHAMPTON PROGRESS ON PENALTIES - That was a nerve-shredder! It's Southampton who advance to the Carabao Cup's fourth round, then as they prevail 6-5 on penalties to squeeze past a spirited Everton. After the captains, Doucoure and Harwood-Bellis, exchanged first-half goals, McCarthy denied Lindstrom for The Saints. At the other end, the dangerous Dibling, on as a substitute, nearly won it with a late strike. To penalties we went and after eleven penalty takers held their nerve spotlessly, Young saw his spot-kick clawed away wonderfully by McCarthy who tipped it onto the post, cueing the Southampton celebrations!
Young's spot-kick is saved brilliantly by McCarthy who dives to his left, diverting the ball onto the left-hand post! Southampton are through!
