The Socceroos have made it three wins from three in World Cup qualifying with a laboured win over Lebanon. Make sure you join me again on Tribe next Tuesday for live commentary of the return fixture in Canberra. It's been a pleasure bringing you all the action from CommBank Stadium in Sydney tonight. For now, Harrison Ryburn signing out.
Of course, these two are back in action again in Canberra on Tuesday for the return fixture. The original fixture was meant to be played back in Lebanon, but current events in the Middle East mean it will be played in the Australian capital. The Socceroos will want a much improved performance, whilst Lebanon will believe they can spring an upset.
A lot to be proud of for Lebanon tonight, who were far from outclassed by their much higher ranked opposition. The Cedars gave their hosts a great contest, and fought hard for everything throughout. Radulovic set them up very defensively, and they proved hard to break down, frustrating their opponents with the organisation of their back-five. They didn't sit too deep either, applying a high line and catching out Taggart in offside positions on multiple occasions. Late on they showed some attacking impetus as well, never giving up and almost finding a first ever goal against Australia when Lajud struck the post. On another day the scoreline could really have been in their favour, with both of the goals they conceded coming in rather unfortunate circumstances. Despite the defeat though, Lebanon stick around to thank the large portion of fans in the stands. This was an incredibly admirable performance and Radulovic will be thinking his men have a chance when they meet again in Canberra.
Jackson Irvine and Baccus were probably their best this evening, dictating play through the middle of the park and dominating the midfield. It was the latter who scored the opening goal, but he'll miss the game in Canberra through suspension after picking up a late yellow card. Probably more questions than answers to come out of this one for the Socceroos in another unconvincing display, but nevertheless they extend their advantage at the top of Group I with three wins from three.
Fulltime in Sydney and Australia pick up an unconvincing win over Lebanon to maintain their perfect record in World Cup qualifying. A pair of first international goals for Keanu Baccus and Kyle Rowles proved the difference, but this was far from a flawless performance from the Socceroos. Graham Arnold's side tried to play with lots of energy and a high tempo, but as they did in the Asian Cup, struggled to break down their opponents with the majority of possession and territory. Both goals were arguably rather flukey too, and outside of those moments, they failed to create many clear-cut chances. First half injuries for Jordan Bos and Riley McGree will have left a sour tastes in the mouth for Arnold also, with the coach now forced to re-asses his options on the wing ahead of the return fixture.
90+5'
SAVE! Darwich steps up to take the free kick right on the top of the box, and powers a low effort towards the bottom right corner of the net. It appears destined for the back of the net, but Ryan does brilliantly to dive across and parry away, maintaining Australia's clean sheet.
90+4'
Nassar wins a throw up the right wing, with Lebanon continuing to search for late some joy. It's sent forward for Darwich, who cuts it back for Bitar at the top of the box. The ball strikes the hand of Iredale though, and the Cedars will have one final chance with a free kick in shooting range.
90+2'
Ryan plays the ball short and Australia look to knock it around at the back under pressure from the Lebanese high press. They manage to get it up to halfway though, and Iredale wins a free kick following a tug of the shirt from Khamis.
90+1'
The corner off the right comes to nothing for Australia and we'll have five minutes of injury time at the end of this one. Lebanon come away with the ball and send numbers forward for another late push. Haidar looks up and plays a searching pass up the middle. It doesn't find a teammate though and Ryan collects at the top of his box.
