Two goals from Annalie Longo have propelled the Wellington Phoenix to back-to-back A-League Women's victories. Make sure you stay with us on Tribe for live coverage of both A-League Men's fixtures later tonight. It's been a pleasure bringing you all the action from Porirua Park this afternoon. For now, Harrison Ryburn signing out.
It's a quicker turnaround for Wellington, who return to action away to the Melbourne Victory on Friday night. They'll be looking to keep the momentum rolling across the ditch, whilst Brisbane host the Mariners on Saturday.
A shock loss for Brisbane, who arrived in Porrirua as big favorites. They struggled to adjust without the presence of their internationals Tameka Yallop and Sharna Freier though, and lacked that accuracy and intensity in periods. Playing against the wind, the visitors struggled to play on the front foot, and were caught playing out from deep on too many occasions. With the wind behind them, they struggled to take advantage though, and Popadinova's injury up top left them without a target going forward. The visitors struggled to piece together many big chances in the second half as such, and have fallen to their second defeat of the new season.
A huge result for the Phoenix this afternoon. It was the work of their high press that put Brisbane under pressure in the opening stanza, and they continued that on into the second, playing with plenty of aggression and energy. The likes of McCutcheon, Whinham, and Longo continously won possession high up the pitch, before getting the ball into some dangerous positions. They didn't put together too many big chances, but were good enough to show a degree of attacking ruthlessness, profiting from two mistakes for two goals from the captain. Paul Temple's side were much better defensively in the second half with Alivia Kelly on the field too, not committing as many numbers forward, and keeping the Roar attack on a leash. Jaber and Barry were tasked with getting physical, and they did just that, frustrating their opponents, and doing enough to distract the visitors. That's a home win on the board for Wellington, and they have found some momentum after losing their first three games of the season.
Fulltime at Porirua Park and two goals from captain Annalie Longo have helped the Wellington Phoenix to back-to-back victories, ending the Brisbane Roar's three-game winning streak. Returning from a facial injury, Longo was exceptional today, scoring her first ten minutes before the break, before adding the winner with twenty to play. Brisbane levelled it up moments before half-time through Ella Pringle, but failed to string too many chances together in the second half, and were noticeably unsettled by the physicality of their opponents. It's a massive three points for the Phoenix, who climb up to seventh on the ladder.
90+7'
Just a few more seconds left for the Phoenix, as Vilao lines up a goal kick. She launches it back up towards halfway into the wind, where McCutcheon loses it over the sideline. It's sent in the direction of Kuilamu, but Wall clears over the sideline for a throw.
90+5'
Main is caught offside moments after the free kick is taken short, and that's a brain fade from Wellington. The visitors send it long down the other end, and win a throw with Blissett. She sends it back in the direction of Sekany, who tries a direct long ball through the middle. It doesn't find a striker though, and bounces through for Vilao to collect.
90+4'
Vilao sends the ball long back downfield, and Fergusson manages to take the ball away from Blissett. She takes off towards the right flank, and wins a free kick right next to the sideline. This will soak up a few more seconds for Wellington, with the ball at the right end.
90+3'
Jaber cuts out a direct ball from Brisbane, before Elliott gives it away in midfield. The visitors are quick to try a long ball forward for Pringle to chase. It's got too much on it though, and rolls into the hands of Vilao.
