Newcastle were the dominant side in the first half, controlling the majority of the play and earning a deserved lead. Bayliss played a key role, providing the assist for Mizunuma, who continued his excellent form to break the deadlock. As the first half progressed, Newcastle pressed on, and their persistence paid off when a deflection fell kindly to Adams inside the box, and he slotted the ball in to double their advantage. However, Brisbane did manage to pull one back just before the break as O'Shea struck a powerful free kick, leaving Newcastle with a slender lead heading into the interval. The second half began with Newcastle holding onto their lead, but Brisbane came out with more intent, looking for an equalizer. Despite their efforts, it was Newcastle who would strike again, with Taylor getting on the end of a rebound after Timmins' shot rattled the right post. The goal gave the Jets a two-goal cushion and significantly eased the pressure on them. From that point forward, Newcastle were in control, and Brisbane struggled to break down their defense.
