The USA have suffered a shock group stage exit at the 2024 Copa America, whilst Uruguay have progressed to the quarter-finals with three wins from three. Make sure you join me again on Tribe tomorrow for that decisive clash in Group D between heavyweights Colombia and Brazil. It's been a pleasure bringing you all the action from Kansas City this evening. For now, Harrison Ryburn signing out.
Uruguay now go onto face the runners-up from Group D in Las Vegas in the quarter-finals. Who that side will be is set to be decided tomorrow, but is very likely to be one of either Colombia or Brazil.
It's delight for Uruguay in contrast, who have wrapped up top spot in the group with a 100% win record at the Copa America for the first time in their history. Biesla's side aknowledged the pressure on their opponents, and formulated a gameplan that played right into that mindset. Uruguay were strong and physical in midfield, and just as Panama did, found a way to upset the USA. As do all Biesla sides, they also pressed very well off the ball, ensuring their opponents felt the full force of that pressure on their shoulders. Uruguay took the game by the scruff of the neck at the start of the second half, and found a clinical touch with Mathias Olivera to wrap the three points. There might be some concern for Maxi Araujo, who was forced off in the first half with a nasty injury, but Biesla has to be very happy with the result, and Uruguay enter the knockout stage as one of the favorites to go all the way.
This will be treated as a major setback for the USA two years out from hosting the 2026 World Cup, and their lead-in to that tournament has been jeopardised with the performances of this Copa America campaign. Expectations were high for Gregg Berhalter's charges on home soil, but defeat to Panama in their second group game cost them dearly, and they failed to make up for lost ground with a positive result against Uruguay tonight. They came out and tried to play at a high tempo, dictating much of the early possession. There was a real lack of prescence up top in attack throughout though, and when Balogun was forced from the field with a knee injury, the USA struggled to piece anything together in the final third. They did make a late push, but this well organised Uruguayan defence proved too difficult to break down, frustrating the likes of Pulisic and Reyna. The pressure simply proved too much for the USA today, and Berhalter's position now as manager is expected to come under a very critical microscope, with vast improvements needed ahead of the global tournament in 2026.
Fulltime in Kansas City and the USA have crashed out at the group stages of the Copa America as tournament hosts. It was a tight and tenacious affair for its entirety, but a lone goal from defender Mathias Olivera has proven enough for Uruguay to edge out the one-goal win, securing top spot in Group C and progression to the quarter-finals. Panama's victory over Bolivia in Orlando confirms the USA's exit, and the boos ring out at Gregg Berhalter and his side at fulltime.
90+5'
Tillman sees his shot from the top of the box blocked, and Nandez has stayed down in the aftermath. Berhalter almost resigns to defeat and sits back down on the bench. His future after this is in jeopardy.
90+4'
Pulisic drives forward through the middle this time, but he runs straight into Bentancur, and the substitute takes possession off him, before winning a throw for Uruguay. They take their time, before launching it back over halfway. Richards intercepts and the USA attempt to push forward again.
90+3'
McKennie restarts all the way back inside his own half, before sending it long down the right for Tillman to win a throw. It's played long into the middle of the penalty area, but again Uruguay clear away with authority.
90+2'
Reyna lifts a dangerous delivery towards the penalty spot off the right in search of Wright, who gets up to nod it back for Sargent in support. Bentancur gets in the way to clear though, and again the USA are denied.
