Final Shootout Score: 4 - 2
Uruguay have scraped through to the semi-finals of the Copa America by virtue of a penalty shoot-out, sending Brazil packing. Make sure you join me again on Tribe for live commentary of both semi-finals coming up later this week, including Uruguay's clash with Colombia in Charlotte. It's been a pleasure bringing you all the action from Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. For now, Harrison Ryburn signing out.
A terrible campaign comes to an end for Brazil, and it's just a continuation of their poor form and struggles over the course of the last eighteen months. Legends of the past have labelled this Brazilian side as one of the worst in history, and it certainly looked that way at times in this tournament. Vinicius Junior's suspension was a big blow tonight, and Dorival Jr was forced to start youngster Endrick up top. The teenage sensation was hardly given room to move against a Uruguayan defence that smothered him though, and aside from a couple of chances in the opening stanza, they really struggled to create anything of note in the final third. It's the first time Brazil have failed to advance to the semi-finals since 2015, and the pressure will now heap on Dorival Jr, with this Brazilian side going through a rough transition phase.
Victory puts an end to Uruguay's quarter-final curse, and they progress into the semi-finals of the Copa America for the first time since winning the competition in 2011. Bielsa encouraged his men to press aggressively tonight, and they did well to keep Brazil contained throughout. They struggled to create much with possession though, and Nunez's header in the opening stanza was the closest they came to breaking the deadlock. A late red card for Nandez left them sweating it, and Bielsa set his team up in a low block as they held out for penalties. His move proved dividends, and La Celeste held their nerve from the spot with a couple of excellent penalties from Valverde, Bentancur, de Arrascaeta, and Ugarte to edge the contest. An almighty challenge awaits against Colombia in the final four though, and Bielsa will know his side have to show a lot more if they are to add an eleventh continental crown in 2024.
Fulltime in Las Vegas and Uruguay have secured passage to the semi-finals of the Copa America with victory over Brazil in a penalty shoot-out. For a contest that promised so much though, it offered very little. Neither side did much to test the other for the duration of the ninety minutes, despite some late nerves for Uruguay with a red card for Nahitan Nandez. Ultimately four excellent La Celeste penalties proved the difference in the shoot-out, booking their place in a semi-final with Colombia on Wednesday in Charlotte.
UGARTE WINS IT FOR URUGUAY! He sends Alisson the wrong way and directs his effort into the top right corner to cap off a brilliant set of Uruguayan penalties.
